Who is the Underground??

How often, in your life, are you a part of something profound...a movement bigger than you and, at the same time, not about you?  How often are you called to do what's right, not because it is convenient, but because you have the responsibility to stand up for a worthwhile cause.  Without resorting to hyperbole, the ACPS Underground is a movement in its nascent stages, modeling itself after the many underground or resistance organizations opposing the oppressive regimes throughout the world.
Ahhh, what the heck...let the hyperbole flow! (My apologies to a great writer, Terese Pencak Schwartz, author of Irek from the Underground.)

Wearing either stolen ACPS name tags or just plain ugly suits, these homemade soldiers were the ACPS Underground -- the resistance fighters of Sherman-occupied Alexandria...

Really, though, while the risks are far less, the cause is just.  We members of the underground seek no reward other than our common goal--to rid the school system of greed and pecuniary/monetary driven policies--to teach our children with a compassion and common sense approach that can only be fueled by teacher driven decisions, to elect an independent-minded school board and to restore teacher morale.

Fathers, grandfathers and young boys fought side by side with only red and white armbands for identification. They came together to defend, as best as they could, their beloved homeland. They concealed their precious cache in cemeteries and hospital grounds.

The city schools are where our teachers work, by day, most fearing to express their disdain for an administration that values them not at all.  After school we emerge and rendezvous with fellow underground members.  We meet with parents and citizens of Alexandria.  We use the internet as our conduit for information.  We organize at bars and each others' homes.  And we meet at bars. After school we gather in classrooms, careful to write our thoughts on dry erase boards, lest someone be listening over the intercom system.  Sometimes we meet at bars.

The city sewers became their staging area, their Headquarters and their passage ways. The younger ones -- teenagers worked as liaisons, running through the sewers smuggling supplies and passing cryptic messages and orders.

We are everywhere.  We are ever-increasing in number.  More than 4,000 page reads, here, yesterday alone.  We are multiple bloggers and blog sites.  We are TRT's and members of the ACPS finance department.  We have the support of at least two principals.
And you are the underground...every time that you refuse to teach to a test, every time you refuse to use Sherman's meaningless vernacular, every time you rip down a Habits of Mind poster or toss out a Lucy Calkins writing series, every time that you refuse to engage in teaching practices that do nothing to further your students' progress, every time that you and a colleague conspire to do what is right...YOU ARE A MEMBER OF THE UNDERGROUND!

Through the wet stinking sewers they moved like rats in sewage that was sometimes chest high. "We would have to dismantle our weapons," says Borowski, "and carry them along with our ammunition over our heads so they would not get wet."

But we will not remain hidden and secretive forever.  A critical mass is building.  Our clandestine operation swells.  Soon the sewer rats will emerge from beneath 2000 North Beauregard Street to be heard!

Update-We are now blocked from ACPS email! You are so afraid of our teachers knowing the truth, Mort!

Shame on you...you trade in misinformation, all the while keeping the truth from our employees.  If you have nothing to fear, open up the server and let our message be heard!

  1. This is unbelievable! I just tried sending the link from my home e-mail to my ACPS e-mail, twice. Blocked! This censorship is outrageous and completely unacceptable! Would the Alexandria Gazette be interested to know about this, or even the Washington Post?

  2. I have to correct my earlier post--I sent the link to my acps address and the message did not appear for several minutes, but it has come through now. I don't know if something else was blocked, but I WAS able to send the link to the ACPS Zimbra address.

  3. Love it all, but don't forget to make the message the focus, not the messenger. The ACPS Ministry of Truth can rally against individuals easily, ideas and the dissemination of them are a bit more challenging. Many, many, many people are taking note of what is going on through emails, blogs, local newspapers, and phone calls. Give them the truth and let the truth spread like a wildfire.

  5. Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.

  6. Blocking free speech? Are we in China? Egypt? No? We're in Alexandria. If the topic being debated did not involve ACPS, the school would be in the wrong for only allowing access to one-side of the story.

  7. Wow. Is this Alexandria Virginia or Alexandria Egypt?

  8. Although many people are reading this blog already, a huge effort to "spread the word" even further is necessary. Let's create simple flyers which include the blog's internet address and start dropping and posting them all over Alexandria!

  9. Something to keep in mind would be possible lawsuits that could crop up in response to this blog. If the intent is to speak truths and share truths, it's important to do so in a way that can't be considered "slander" or "defamation of character". Yes, the posts and comments are "anonymous", but IP addresses could be traced if a lawsuit should occur.

I appreciate this blog and I'm glad to know that there are others who are unhappy with the current climate in ACPS. It may be time to decide on a very clear direction, though. Do you want to vent and make people out to be villians...or, do you want to arm people with the truth in hopes that they'll become as enraged as many of us have become?

My idea (above) to create simple flyers to distribute is one that I'll continue to consider. I think it's important for all citizens of Alexandria to fully understand the operations of the current Superintendent. However, I'd like to be sure that the blog's guiding principle is to disseminate facts alone.

  10. I don't understand how they can so efficiently block emails but cannot seem to block facebook/porn/drugs/ and weapons from the student laptops. Geeze.

  11. In light of what one of my friends above stated, I should probably ask you to take the Nazi comment out (I made the comment). It is a true comment, but I want to respect this important blog (and our careers.) thanks for you attention and all that you are doing.

  12. Do not hide from the truth, shine a light on it and let others make judgments. What is happening in Alexandria's school system is a mockery of learning and democracy. Speak out now and speak out loud.

  13. I always thought that the Underground fought for freedom from tyranny. I have a hard time finding fault with that philosophy. I'm proud to be part of it.
